Curls Stylin’ with Esmesha

Hey Curly Chicks!

Yasss, I’m super elated for our very first Curly Stylin’ feature, Esmesha Campbell. I’ll let her introduce herself:

Hey everyone! My name is Esmesha Campbell and I’ve been a naturalista my entire life! I was born and raised in northeast Houston, right outside of Fifth Ward. I’m a proud alumna of the illustrious Prairie View A&M University where I majored in political science with a minor in sociology. I also attended Texas Southern Umiversity where I received my Master of Public Admnistration with a specialty in Urban Planning and Environmental Policy. I am currently a full-time staff writer for the #1 multicultural online magazine, Fashion Bomb Daily, and I’ve been a part of the team for almost two years. Back in March, I founded my own lifestyle blog,, which acts as an outlet that houses many of my personal adventures, and stylistic musings. In my spare time, I find myself sifting through interior design books, visiting museums, traveling, shopping, Netflixing, spending time with my family and discovering new hot spots within the Bayou City.

How would you describe your natural hair?

My natural hair is powerful! I find that I am most confident when I grab my edge control and slick back my soft tendrils into the chic, simple bun that has, now, become my signature style. My hair is unstoppable, my hair is unique and my hair tells a story. In fact, it’s a living testament of the definition of beauty my mother instilled within me as a young girl. She never let a day pass without reminding my sister and I of how special our ebony curls truly were. For, it is because of her love and teachings, that I am able to effortlessly embrace what God has bestowed unto me.

How would you describe your personal style?

Without a doubt, my style is unpredictable and whimsical. I went through a brief period where I was strictly drawn to classics – whether that meant investing in a polished, crisp white button up or the perfect pair of J. Crew printed trousers. Yet, after attending New York Fashion Week for the first time in February, my sartorial choices have evolved into more eccentric and glamorous aesthetics. I’m now the chick that rocks sequins 24/7, splurges on off-the-wall statement pieces and drools over the dopest pair of perspex heels! Emotion is another large factor that assists in distinguishing my personal style.

How does your natural hair impact your person style/fashion choices (if at all)?

I’ll admit, wearing my natural hair gives me this “you-can’t-mess-with-me” type attitude. My natural hair makes me feel like a total queen and, with that sense of confidence, comes an intense fearlessness that translates into en edited yet bold personal style. Due to my natural coif, I’m definitely more open-minded in my fashion choices and I’m more prone to embracing change especially with the diversity of runway and street style trends.

What makes your natural hair magical and/or if your hair could have a superpower, what would be?

I love this question! If my hair had a superpower, I would love to possess the gift of healing others. I know, I know – it may sound a little cliche but I’m all for helping those in need. So, if I woke up one morning and had the God-given ability to cure an ailing relative, friend or associate, I’d jump at the opportunity. But hey, with or without the superpower, my natural hair is already magical. It never ceases to amaze me. And, let’s not forget about that #BlackGirlMagic that’s already floating around!
What is your favorite hairstyle and which products and techniques do you use to achieve this style?

When it comes to my natural hair, I sort of coin myself as a “creature of habit”. I’m very picky about the products I use and the various ways I choose to style it. My favorite styles are pretty straightforward though – I’m always game for a sleek bun. I also love to channel my inner Janet Jackson with the protective style that’s literally everywhere right now, box braids. Protective styles are always a good way to give your strands a little break while giving you the freedom to still give it some TLC. As far as products go, I LIVE for the Organix hair line! I’m an avid supporter of the Organix Nourishing Coconut Spray Oil and Organix Coconut Milk Shampoo and Conditioner. They’re incredibly affordable and they work wonders! I wash my hair every few weeks and I used the oil as a mode of moisturization. I ease a fair amount along my edges and throughout my hair for maximum effectiveness. Creme of Nature’s Perfect Edge Control with Argan Oil comes in a close runner-up. I’m also an olive oil addict.

If you could give any hair (or style) advice to your newly natural self, what would it be?

Keep taking risks because, in the future, you’d be mad you didn’t! And, don’t live in fear of what others may think of you because their opinions and perceptions don’t define who you are.
